A Caterer Crazy for Carbs!

Whoopie Pie Bites!

I’ll admit it:  I’m crazy for carbs.  If my own personal diet was restricted to three items, it would be bread, butter, and cheese.   Possibly some water.  According to WebMD www.WebMD.com
“Does a bad day at the office or a tiff with your spouse send you marching to the cookie jar or the corner bakery?  Or do you find yourself at the vending machine every day precisely at 4PM for some crackers or candy?  If either scenario fits, your not alone.  Many people crave carbohydrates – especially cookies, candy, or ice cream – when they feel upset, depressed, or tired.”
As a caterer in the Washington DC area in the spring of 2016 I would like to add one more cause for craving:  NON STOP RAIN.  Give. It. A. Rest. Mother. Nature.  It has been this dreary shade of gray for how many days in a row?  15? 20?

Pasta and Bread are Reasons To Be

“Carb craving is a part of daily life,” says Judith Wurtman, PhD, “we discovered years and years ago that many people experience the ‘universal carbohydrate craving time’ between 3:30 and 5PM every day, I suspect the tradition of English tea with its carb offereing is a ritual developed to fill this need.”
Enter Russian Teacake, the very first cookie I learned to bake as a very young girl.  There is such a backlash about all thing carb, especially with regards to loosing and keeping off weight.  I get it.  Then I forget it.  And I don’t regret it.  I just don’t buy into the carb guilt. Note I specifically name carb guilt, I have plenty of guilt over non related subjects.

Bagels for Breakfast pretty much Every Day

I’m a bagel girl.  I may cater wedding receptions all across Northern Virginia serving Chicken Marabella and Gazpacho Shooters, but at the end of the day just give me a slice of hot buttered multi grained toast.  Or the beginning of pretty much every day:  bagel and butter.
Truly, the only improvement to a bread product, would be a bread product WITH CHEESE.

carb craving
Yes.  Just Yes.

“You could be down because of loss of money in the stock market” (I see donuts) “The depression is triggered by an external event, not by only a dip in serotonin.”
Their suggestons:
“Choose sensible carbohydrate-rich foods.”  I think they are all sensible.  That’s why they exist in the first place.
Don’t buy into the guilt:  “There is nothing wrong with having a carb for dinner, or for a snack.”  Now your talking.
Focus on carb that are “slow foods” think:  sip, not gobble.  “Hot Chocolate:  you get carbs in the milk and the sweetened chocolate, but it’s hard to guzzle hot chocolate, so you are going to savor it.”
All good advice, and my catering freezer if chock full of goodies such as Rhapsody Torte, Chocolate Salted Caramel Tart, Apple Bavarian Tort, Rocky Road Brownies, Cream Cheese Brownies, New York Style Cheese Cake. Catering By Teatime SPECIALIZES in desserts.

Bite Sized Dessert Offerings

My trick is to cut all dessert and yummies into one and two bite portions to minimize the guilt.  My life here on Planet Earth is just too damn short.  I’m not going to eliminate things that TASTE AWESOME.  People:  that’s just stupid.  My days will always be full of toasty products, buttery bites, cheesy this that and the other.  There’s plenty of other “stuff” that truly needs to be avoided, like annoying people.  Let’s all embrace things that taste delicious!

I agree that English tea was probably invented to sate mid-afternoon carb-craving! We're even having an English tea wedding breakfast as carbs are vital to soak up all that champagne. I also love the sound of your delicious Russian teacake cookie – please can you share the recipe if you still have it?
