Wedding Cocktails 2016

Great Cocktails from One Master Recipe

Who doesn’t love a great cocktail?  The May 2016 issue of Bon Appetit magazine www.bonappetit.com
has a great photo article featuring a boozy chart that doesn’t copy well, so here’s the gist of it.  Whether you are at a catered event, a wedding reception, or hosting a backyard BBQ, there is a basic formula to build some classic cocktails.  The first thing is to get the Basic Sour Formula down:

Basic Sour Formula

This Washington DC caterer loves a classic cocktail, taking a base liquor, then adding sour and sweet ingredients and sometimes a bonus element or two.  Garnish. Enjoy. Repeat.

1 and 2  Tequila:  Margarita – Fresh Lime juice and Simple Syrup.  Kosher salt for rim.
Siesta – Fresh Lime juice and simple syrup PLUS 1/2 oz Campari and 1/2 oz fresh grapefruit juice

3 and 4 Rum:  Daiquiri – Fresh Lime Juice and Simple Syrup, lime twist
Mojito – Fresh Lime Juice and Simple Syrup (with 2 mint sprigs), club soda, mint for garnish

5 and 6 Gin:  French 75 – Fresh Lemon Juice and Simple Syrup plus 2 oz Champagne, long spiral lemon twist for garnish
Aviation – Fresh Lemon Juice and Maraschino liqueur, maraschino cherry garnish

7 and 8 – Vodka:  Cosmo – Fresh Lime Juice and Triple Sec PLUS 1 oz cranberry juice, orange twist garnish
Kamikaze – Fresh Lime Juice and Triple Sec

9 and 10 – Bourbon:  Gold Rush – Fresh Lemon Juice and Honey (slow to dissolve so shake well)
Whiskey Sour – Fresh Lemon Juice and Simple Syrup, 1/2 orange wheel and maraschino cherry for garnish

Basically you just use any combination of liquor, sweet and sour.  Citrus can be the sweet, or triple sec (an orange flavored liquor).  I’ve done a riff on the Cosmo called a White Bombshell using Vanilla Vodka in addition to the regular Vodka, white grape juice instead of the red cranberry.  It’s deadly delicious. And those Kamikazes?  There’s a reason for the name…just saying.

Catering provides me the opportunity to see a lot of signature cocktails as well.  Great way to save some money on your wedding budget.  Instead of providing a full bar, simply select one great cocktail to serve during the early hours of the reception.  So many ways to personalize the drink and have fun at the same time.  Read:  sample nights.
